You wanted this.&quot;<\/em> No\u2014that's not love. No desire justifies crossing someone's boundaries.<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cI really love you.\u201d or \u201cGod wants this love.\u201d<\/em> No \u2013 that\u2019s not love. Love allows space to breathe, to grow, and to choose freely. It does not take away your freedom.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<em>\u201cIf you tell anyone, you\u2019ll be sent away.\u201d or \u201cThen Mum will be sad.\u201d<\/em> No \u2013 that\u2019s not love. Love does not silence; it creates freedom.<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cYou\u2019re lying again, now I have to punish you.\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cThis is your fault.\u201d<\/em> No\u2014that's not love. These are manipulative tactics to make you submissive. <strong>It&#039;s not your fault.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<em>\u201cStop making a fuss, you want it too.\u201d<\/em> No \u2013 that is not love. Sexuality must always be based on <strong>mutual consent<\/strong>. Even if you love someone, <strong>you have the right to say no<\/strong> \u2013 and your no must be respected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sexualised violence is not a momentary lapse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment -->It is often <strong>deliberately and carefully prepared -<\/strong> The timing is rarely accidental.<br \/>\nYou have the right to <strong>say no<\/strong>.  You have the right to <strong>seek help<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forum-studie.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>You can download the ForuM study here<\/em><\/a> and <em><a href=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Zusammenfassung_ForuM-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/em> the summary) In response to the findings, the <strong>the EKD established a Specialised Unit on Sexualised Violence and a Communications Office, in cooperation with the Participation Forum on Sexualised Violence.<\/strong> These bodies regularly share updates and reflections via email(newsletter@forum.ekd.de).             <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/p>\n<p><strong>What the Independent Study Reveals \u2013 Facts and Reflections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thousands of files were examined \u2014 including disciplinary records, personnel files, and other documents. The analysis reveals:<br \/>\n        <div class=\"rmwr-wrapper\" \n             data-id=\"rmwr-6a0c2937c9da2\"\n             data-mode=\"normal\"\n             data-animation=\"fade\"\n             data-duration=\"300\"\n             data-smooth-scroll=\"true\"\n             data-scroll-offset=\"0\">\n            <button \n                type=\"button\"\n                class=\"read-link\" \n                id=\"readlinkrmwr-6a0c2937c9da2\"\n                data-open-text=\"mehr lesen\"\n                data-close-text=\"weniger lesen\"\n                aria-expanded=\"false\"\n                aria-controls=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937c9da2\"\n                aria-label=\"read more\"\n            >\n                <span class=\"rmwr-text\">read more<\/span>\n            <\/button>\n            <div \n                class=\"read_div\" \n                id=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937c9da2\"\n                aria-hidden=\"true\"\n                data-animation=\"fade\"\n                data-duration=\"300\"\n                style=\"display: none;\"\n            >\n                <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1831 individuals were accused and 3250 affected<\/strong> persons were documented, though many records remain undisclosed.<\/li>\n<li>Because one regional church made its personnel files available \u2014 something the other <strong>19 regional churches did not<\/strong> have done!) it became clear in comparison to the disciplinary records in this regional church:<br \/>\n<strong>\u2013 57.1% of the accused would not have been recognized<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> \u2013 73.9% of those affected<\/strong> <strong>would not have been recorded!!!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>More than two-thirds of the perpetrators were married<\/strong>, many began to abuse <strong>after their ordination,<\/strong> the average age was <strong>43 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>- Sexualised violence was rarely an isolated incident<\/strong> most perpetrators abused repeatedly, harming multiple children<strong>(on average five)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Almost all perpetrators were men<\/strong> (almost 100% of those working in the parish office), although almost half of those working in the parish office are now women.<\/li>\n<li>Children were <strong>average age 11 years<\/strong>, most of them under 14 years old.<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>federal and partly non-binding structures<\/strong> have contributed to the frequency and persistence of sexualised violence, while hindering transparency and protection.            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>Catholic MHG study<\/strong> reveals a similarly troubling pattern\u00a0        <div class=\"rmwr-wrapper\" \n             data-id=\"rmwr-6a0c2937c9e4a\"\n             data-mode=\"normal\"\n             data-animation=\"fade\"\n             data-duration=\"300\"\n             data-smooth-scroll=\"true\"\n             data-scroll-offset=\"0\">\n            <button \n                type=\"button\"\n                class=\"read-link\" \n                id=\"readlinkrmwr-6a0c2937c9e4a\"\n                data-open-text=\"mehr lesen\"\n                data-close-text=\"weniger lesen\"\n                aria-expanded=\"false\"\n                aria-controls=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937c9e4a\"\n                aria-label=\"read more\"\n            >\n                <span class=\"rmwr-text\">read more<\/span>\n            <\/button>\n            <div \n                class=\"read_div\" \n                id=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937c9e4a\"\n                aria-hidden=\"true\"\n                data-animation=\"fade\"\n                data-duration=\"300\"\n                style=\"display: none;\"\n            >\n                 Here too, many perpetrators were <strong>repeat offender.<\/strong> <strong>In contrast to patterns of sexualised violence outside religious institutions, boys were more frequently victimised than girls.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study ran from 2014 to 2018. For the Catholic MHG study, approximately<strong> 38,156 personnel files<\/strong> which only represented a portion of all clergy. The study examined the sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests, deacons and male members of religious orders in the area of the German Bishops&#039; Conference from the time of <strong>1946 to 2014.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In both studies, the perpetrators were predominantly male, often repeat offenders, and almost always in positions of authority. In the MHG Study, the average age at the time of the first offence was around 42.<br \/>\n<strong>While a direct comparison of case numbers is not methodologically possible, the findings suggest that the number of those affected may have been similarly high in both the Catholic and Protestant churches. And for far too long, it was simply tolerated.         <div class=\"rmwr-wrapper\" \n             data-id=\"rmwr-6a0c2937ca31b\"\n             data-mode=\"normal\"\n             data-animation=\"fade\"\n             data-duration=\"300\"\n             data-smooth-scroll=\"true\"\n             data-scroll-offset=\"0\">\n            <button \n                type=\"button\"\n                class=\"read-link\" \n                id=\"readlinkrmwr-6a0c2937ca31b\"\n                data-open-text=\"mehr lesen\"\n                data-close-text=\"weniger lesen\"\n                aria-expanded=\"false\"\n                aria-controls=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937ca31b\"\n                aria-label=\"read more\"\n            >\n                <span class=\"rmwr-text\">read more<\/span>\n            <\/button>\n            <div \n                class=\"read_div\" \n                id=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937ca31b\"\n                aria-hidden=\"true\"\n                data-animation=\"fade\"\n                data-duration=\"300\"\n                style=\"display: none;\"\n            >\n                 This was also expressed in folk songs, e.g.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volksliederarchiv.de\/war-einst-ein-karmeliter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">War einst ein Kameliter,<\/a> (in a song that satirically addresses abuse in church structures) sung here by <a title=\"Once upon a time there was a camelite - sung by Zupfgeigenhansel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=weJMEopmOJo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zupfgeigenhansel<\/a> . Terms like <em>Solicitation<\/em> - a canonical term for sexual advances made by a priest during confession \u2013 reveal how deeply rooted the issue is. Historically, victims were required to report such acts within four weeks, or they risked automatic excommunication. These regulations have since been revised; the Vatican\u2019s 2010 norms on serious offences no longer include penalties for the person confessing. \u00a0            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/p>\n<p>But sexualised violence is not confined to Christianity. It occurs in other major religions too <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srf.ch\/kultur\/gesellschaft-religion\/kritik-an-kloestern-in-europa-missbrauchsvorwuerfe-erschuettern-den-tibetischen-buddhismus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Buddhism<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschlandfunk.de\/sexuelle-uebergriffe-im-judentum-rabbiner-mit-doppelleben-100.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judaism<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/hpd.de\/artikel\/sexueller-missbrauch-moscheen-14882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Islam<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. <\/em>Often, it is rigid, \u201csacred\u201d structures and unclear lines of responsibility that allow abuse to flourish.<\/p>\n<p>And: <strong>Sexual violence also exists:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2013 in sports clubs<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2013 in associations and organisations<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2013 among friends<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2013 in (children\u2019s) homes<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2013 in relationships and former partnerships<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2013 and most frequently, within families<\/strong><br \/>\n        <div class=\"rmwr-wrapper\" \n             data-id=\"rmwr-6a0c2937ca37d\"\n             data-mode=\"normal\"\n             data-animation=\"fade\"\n             data-duration=\"300\"\n             data-smooth-scroll=\"true\"\n             data-scroll-offset=\"0\">\n            <button \n                type=\"button\"\n                class=\"read-link\" \n                id=\"readlinkrmwr-6a0c2937ca37d\"\n                data-open-text=\"mehr lesen\"\n                data-close-text=\"weniger lesen\"\n                aria-expanded=\"false\"\n                aria-controls=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937ca37d\"\n                aria-label=\"read more\"\n            >\n                <span class=\"rmwr-text\">read more<\/span>\n            <\/button>\n            <div \n                class=\"read_div\" \n                id=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937ca37d\"\n                aria-hidden=\"true\"\n                data-animation=\"fade\"\n                data-duration=\"300\"\n                style=\"display: none;\"\n            >\n                <br \/>\nThe image of a stranger lurking in the dark, nothing to do except of waiting to harm a young woman on a lonely path, is rarely the reality.<\/p>\n<p>Sexualised violence happens primarily within closed systems and power imbalances \u2013 as seen in the Catholic Church. It also occurs in institutions where responsibilities are vague and where a culture of indifference or lack of oversight prevails \u2013 including in Protestant contexts.\nIt is present in all communal structures where people live, work, and relate to one another. But it is especially prevalent in families, where closeness, dependency, and lack of external control create particular vulnerability.\nIn over 90% of cases, perpetrators are male.<br \/>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/p>\n<h3>The social response to abuse<\/h3>\n        <div class=\"rmwr-wrapper\" \n             data-id=\"rmwr-6a0c2937ca417\"\n             data-mode=\"normal\"\n             data-animation=\"fade\"\n             data-duration=\"300\"\n             data-smooth-scroll=\"true\"\n             data-scroll-offset=\"0\">\n            <button \n                type=\"button\"\n                class=\"read-link\" \n                id=\"readlinkrmwr-6a0c2937ca417\"\n                data-open-text=\"mehr lesen\"\n                data-close-text=\"weniger lesen\"\n                aria-expanded=\"false\"\n                aria-controls=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937ca417\"\n                aria-label=\"read more\"\n            >\n                <span class=\"rmwr-text\">read more<\/span>\n            <\/button>\n            <div \n                class=\"read_div\" \n                id=\"readrmwr-6a0c2937ca417\"\n                aria-hidden=\"true\"\n                data-animation=\"fade\"\n                data-duration=\"300\"\n                style=\"display: none;\"\n            >\n                When abuse comes to light within a community, reactions often follow a familiar pattern \u2013 not unlike the Catholic Church\u2019s initial response to its scandals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Disbelief and shock<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cover-ups and denial<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pressure on victims, minimisation and defensiveness<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Abuse is not a passing issue, nor can it be dismissed as a product of the times. rel=\"noopener\">Deutsches \u00c4rzteblattl, 2019<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>An analysis by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse shows, <strong>that victims of abuse usually have very precise memories of their experiences <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hughjames.com\/blog\/false-memory-syndrome-child-sexual-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hugh James, 2020<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>The British Psychological Society confirms that both real and false memories exist \u2013 <strong>but real memories of abuse are usually stable and well documented<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/psychologist\/false-memories-childhood-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BPS, 2017<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The fact that many cases never came to light <strong>was not due to victims' \u201cimagination\u201d,<\/strong>, but to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The shame of those affected<\/li>\n<li>The power of institutional structures<\/li>\n<li>he deliberate
