Commitment to organizations such as Bread for the World, Misereor, and Welthungerhilfe is an example of how Christians are committed to helping people in need around the world.             <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Charity \u2013 a special feature of Christianity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus not only preached charity, he lived it.         <div class=\"rmwr-wrapper\" \n             data-id=\"rmwr-6a0c293a02d4c\"\n             data-mode=\"normal\"\n             data-animation=\"fade\"\n             data-duration=\"300\"\n             data-smooth-scroll=\"true\"\n             data-scroll-offset=\"0\">\n            <button \n                type=\"button\"\n                class=\"read-link\" \n                id=\"readlinkrmwr-6a0c293a02d4c\"\n                data-open-text=\"mehr lesen\"\n                data-close-text=\"weniger lesen\"\n                aria-expanded=\"false\"\n                aria-controls=\"readrmwr-6a0c293a02d4c\"\n                aria-label=\"read more\"\n            >\n                <span class=\"rmwr-text\">read more<\/span>\n            <\/button>\n            <div \n                class=\"read_div\" \n                id=\"readrmwr-6a0c293a02d4c\"\n                aria-hidden=\"true\"\n                data-animation=\"fade\"\n                data-duration=\"300\"\n                style=\"display: none;\"\n            >\n                 He touched the marginalized, fed the hungry, and saw the people others overlooked. &quot;Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.&quot; (Matthew 25:40) He was clearly saying:<strong> action matters. And: God can be experienced through one\u2019s neighbour.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s fascinating is that this principle of active love was not \u2013 and still isn\u2019t \u2013 universally self-evident. A Tibetan Buddhist professor we met in Dharamshala expressed deep admiration for Christianity, precisely for this reason: <strong>\u201cThrough Christianity, we have learned in Buddhism to actively practise charity.\u201d<\/strong> While compassion is deeply rooted in Buddhism, the idea of practical help only spread through intercultural exchange. We heard similar statements from Thich Nhat Hanh and the Dalai Lama. But who is that neighbour?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>o answer this very question, Jesus told the story of the <strong>Good Samaritan<\/strong> (Luke 10:25\u201337) A priest and a Levite, members of the tribe whose duty it was to perform temple services and impart faith, passed by the humiliated, beaten, robbed, and needy man. But a man from a despised ethnic group, who, in the eyes of those listening, &quot;did not believe rightly,&quot; stopped and helped.<br \/>\nHe likely helped not out of superiority, but because he knew what it was like to be a victim, to be excluded.<br \/>\nJesus presented him as a role model and called on others to act likewise: not just to offer wise words, but to help where needed. Perhaps because they know how terrible it is. Perhaps because they are not above the situation, but have been victims themselves, bullied or excluded at some point.<\/p>\n<p>A neighbour, then, is first and foremost the one who falls at my feet.<br \/>\n        <div class=\"rmwr-wrapper\" \n             data-id=\"rmwr-6a0c293a03664\"\n             data-mode=\"normal\"\n             data-animation=\"fade\"\n             data-duration=\"300\"\n             data-smooth-scroll=\"true\"\n             data-scroll-offset=\"0\">\n            <button \n                type=\"button\"\n                class=\"read-link\" \n                id=\"readlinkrmwr-6a0c293a03664\"\n                data-open-text=\"mehr lesen\"\n                data-close-text=\"weniger lesen\"\n                aria-expanded=\"false\"\n                aria-controls=\"readrmwr-6a0c293a03664\"\n                aria-label=\"read more\"\n            >\n                <span class=\"rmwr-text\">read more<\/span>\n            <\/button>\n            <div \n                class=\"read_div\" \n                id=\"readrmwr-6a0c293a03664\"\n                aria-hidden=\"true\"\n                data-animation=\"fade\"\n                data-duration=\"300\"\n                style=\"display: none;\"\n            >\n                <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My family<\/li>\n<li>My neighbours<\/li>\n<li>My friends<\/li>\n<li>My colleagues<\/li>\n<li>My partners<\/li>\n<li>People in my volunteer work<\/li>\n<li>People I like and people I don&#039;t like.<\/li>\n<li>People who think badly of me.             <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><strong>Charity applies to everyone \u2013 including myself.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe real challenge is to live it consistently, even when others don't. Just because I&#039;m denied respect doesn&#039;t give me the right to treat others disrespectfully. Charity remains independent of external circumstances\u2014it&#039;s a conscious decision. Especially if I&#039;ve experienced exclusion myself, it&#039;s important not to duck away or ignore my own experience, but to help others as well. This is how healing can occur.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p>Won&#039;t I lose myself then?             <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Is charity self-sacrifice?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The story of the Good Samaritan continues:\u00a0         <div class=\"rmwr-wrapper\" \n             data-id=\"rmwr-6a0c293a03736\"\n             data-mode=\"normal\"\n             data-animation=\"fade\"\n             data-duration=\"300\"\n             data-smooth-scroll=\"true\"\n             data-scroll-offset=\"0\">\n            <button \n                type=\"button\"\n                class=\"read-link\" \n                id=\"readlinkrmwr-6a0c293a03736\"\n                data-open-text=\"mehr lesen\"\n                data-close-text=\"weniger lesen\"\n                aria-expanded=\"false\"\n                aria-controls=\"readrmwr-6a0c293a03736\"\n                aria-label=\"read more\"\n            >\n                <span class=\"rmwr-text\">read more<\/span>\n            <\/button>\n            <div \n                class=\"read_div\" \n                id=\"readrmwr-6a0c293a03736\"\n                aria-hidden=\"true\"\n                data-animation=\"fade\"\n                data-duration=\"300\"\n                style=\"display: none;\"\n            >\n                 He helps the man, takes him to a safe place, and gives the innkeeper money to care for him\u2014the Samaritan himself moves on. So, not self-sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately after the story of the Good Samaritan comes the <strong>Story of two women: Mary and Martha<\/strong>(Luke 10:38-42) Theologians assume that the first story is for men: Practice what you preach! \u2013 and the second story is for women, with the tenor: Don't just give, but also recharge spiritually!<br \/>\nMartha is busy, tending to the holy guests, preparing the food so that Jesus would feel comfortable\u2014that is, the woman&#039;s role\u2014and she is dissatisfied. She wants her sister Mary to help her. But Mary is sitting at Jesus&#039; feet, listening to his words. Jesus replies: It&#039;s good that Mary isn&#039;t serving right now, but listening. &quot;One thing is necessary.&quot;             <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/p>\n<p>So charity is not the opposite of self-love! He trusted others to cope with the \"No\" \u2013 and perhaps even repent.<\/p>\n<p>And he taught people in conflict a third, non-violent path that leads to freedom.<\/p>\n<p>You can say what you want or don't want, even if another person doesn't like this.<\/p>\n<p>You have the right to set boundaries and say NO.<\/p>\n<p>You have the right to express your wishes and the other person has also the right to say no.<\/p>\n<p>You are allowed to disappoint others.<\/p>\n<p>This is actually necessary so that others don&#039;t feel guilty about you. No one can read minds. To treat each other lovingly, we need to speak openly and clearly state what we need\u2014and realize that we each have the freedom to say no. Those who grow up in an environment of hatred, conflict, and violence unconsciously pass on these influences \u2013 unless they work on themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-care can present challenges<\/strong> \u2013 Some turn others into permanent helpers, remain dependent, and prevent those around them from becoming independent or defending themselves against the perpetrator. In a distorted way, they themselves become perpetrators.<br \/>\n<strong>Trauma, too, is often passed on<\/strong> \u2013 Some submit out of fear, while others repeat violence they have experienced and become perpetrators themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The French psychologist Pierre Janet summed it up perfectly in 1902:<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThose who fail to realize a trauma are forced to repeat or re-enact it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment -->            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        \n<h3><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The power of experienced love provides a way to break out of these patterns and suffering.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those who experience genuine appreciation \u2013 from parents, from those around them, or through spiritual experiences \u2013 can experience healing.<br \/>\nThose who feel the certainty of being carried and held by universal love or by God find a deep inner strength that enables them to pass on love and to help others appropriately.<\/p>\n<p>Love is more than an emotion \u2013 it is a source of strength that transforms us and helps us live it in the world.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>A daily exercise<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A Buddhist monk once said: <em>\u201cIf you think you are enlightened, visit your family \u2013 you'll soon know whether it's true.\u201d<\/em> Because charity begins in everyday life \u2013 with the people around us. And we are always learning.
